What Backup & Disaster Recovery Actually Means
Business Continuity Disaster Recovery (BCDR) means keeping secure, tested copies of your business data so you can get back to work after ransomware, equipment failure, accidental deletion, fire, flood, or any other interruption.
Good backup is more than storage.
It’s a system that:
- Takes automatic copies of your files, databases, and systems
- Stores them securely in multiple locations
- Protects them from tampering or encryption by attackers
- Tests restores regularly so you know recovery actually works
- Gets you back online in hours or days, not weeks
What Backup Is NOT
Let’s clear up some common misunderstandings:
- Cloud sync is not backup. OneDrive, Dropbox, and Google Drive sync files, but if you delete something or ransomware encrypts it, the synced copy gets encrypted or deleted too.
- RAID is not backup. RAID protects against a single drive failure, but it won’t help if ransomware hits, a file is accidentally deleted, or the entire server fails.
- A NAS (Network Attached Storage) in your office is not enough. If ransomware or fire destroys your building, an on-site backup goes with it.
- Backups don’t prevent disasters. They reduce damage and speed up recovery. No backup eliminates every risk.

Why Backups Fail When You Need Them Most
We’ve seen businesses discover their backup didn’t work only after disaster struck. Here’s what usually goes wrong:
- Never tested – Backup jobs run, but no one ever tries restoring. When it’s time to recover, critical files are missing or corrupted.
- Not monitored – Backup software fails silently for weeks. Nobody notices until it’s too late.
- Attackers find them – Ransomware gangs hunt for backups, delete snapshots, and compromise admin accounts before encrypting your systems.
- Wrong recovery speed – Backups exist but take days or weeks to restore, causing extended downtime.
- Incomplete coverage – Servers are backed up, but Microsoft 365, databases, or employee laptops aren’t.
- No offsite copy – All backups are on-site or accessible to the same compromised admin account.
Our job is to close these gaps before you need your backups.
